  Jourden

  Marking another month off the calendar, AW17 is an opportunity for fresh beginnings. Ripe with adages of turning leaves and changing seasons, the fashion world also looks to sources of new talent for style’s next narrative.

  Springing forth onto the fashion landscape with a sense of unchallenged ambition and plucky next-gen gumption, young start ups have the unique ability to reinvigorate tired style tropes with an off-guard eclectism that puts everyday silhouettes in a new perspective.   Magda Butrym

  Fashion has long been accused of having no soul. Well, Magda Butrym has arrived to ensure we add a little bit of love back into what we wear with a collection that is made to pull at your heart strings.

  Returning to a time when artisans gave a personal touch to each design, her manual approach to manufacturing and craftsman’s attitude to colour brings an ephemeral elegance to every collection, combining hand woven textiles with hand pleated leather-made in her maternal homeland of Poland.

  Why be a generalist when you can be a specialist? That’s the idea behind Area, the textile lab based out of NYC that’s more than just fashion-it’s also a fully operational design studio and professional textile manipulation think tank.

  Not quite catwalk nor pure creation, each collection is a showcase of their latest experiments whilst furthering the field of fabric design-and if that leads to a few statement styles along the way, so be it! Adored in the underground press for its divisive conceptualisation of anything-but-ordinary accessories and Technicolor printing techniques, Area NYC is proving what a touch of technology can do to simple twill.

  Launching their e-commerce platform in line with the latest collection, editorial vanguards have already been spied wearing their Perspex eyewear and ice cube earrings-with the mainstream soon to follow…

  

  

  

  

  Jourden

  A citizen of the world that has returned home to Hong Kong to put her strong European aesthetics into practice, Anaïs Jourden Mak is the 27-year up starter that is part of a new league of Chinese designers bringing east and west together. Starting her career as a fashion writer before moving into design, she first showed up on the international scene when her collection was shortlisted for the 2015 LVMH prize.

  Studying at Paris’s Studio Berçot, Anaïs is an icon for cross continental inclusion, travelling between fashion capitals to take in the mix of high and low, old and new, refined and raw for inspiration. Creating a look that speaks to a new generation consumer, her latest collection was hailed for its modern, mixed media message with extroverted and reinvented retro styles.
