经常会遇到一些让初学者觉得为难的词句
还很容易闹出笑话来。
今天我们就一起看看容易让你“尴尬”的句子！
１. It’s a wise father that knows his own child.
再英明的父亲，也未必了解自己的孩子。
误译点：It’s … that…
这句话出自莎士比亚《威尼斯商人》，最开始的版本是朱生豪的译文：只有聪明的父亲才会知道他自己的儿子。刘云波认为朱先生译错了，给出的译文是：再聪明的父亲也未必了解自己的孩子。刘云波说：“这是英谚中一种特殊句型的翻译”。
再比如：
It is a good horse that never stumbles.
再好的马也有失蹄的时候。
He is a good physician who cures himself.
再好的医生也未必能医好自己的病。
2. I have no opinion of that sort of man.
我对这类人很反感。
我不赞成那种人的意见。
误译点：no opinion
3. The picture flattered her.
她比较上镜。
误译点：flatter
Flatter用的比较多的意思是“奉承、讨好、或自命不凡”
这句话里面用的意思是：~ sb, 使显得漂亮（to make sb. seem more attractive or better than they really are）
4. The country not agreeing with her, she returned to England.
她在那个国家水土不服，所以回到了英国。
误译点：agree with
agree with常用的意思是“与...意见一致；同意”，这里表达的意思是“适宜于...的健康或体质”。
5. He is a walking skeleton.
他骨瘦如柴。
6. The machine is in repair.
机器已经修好了。
误译点：in repair
in repair 表达的意思为in good repair
正在维修中为under repair
7. You don’t begin to understand what they mean.
你根本不知道他们在干嘛。（don’t begin to：决不）
8. They didn’t praise him slightly.
他们大大地表扬了他。
9. That’s all I want to hear.
我已经听够了。（够了，别再说了）
10. You cannot give him too much money.
你给他再多的钱也不算多。
误译点：not … too 表示“再…也不为过”
11. The monk is only not a dead man.
这个和尚虽然活着，但跟死了差不多。
是不是联想到了“有的人活着，他已经死了；有的人死了，他还活着”？
12. You look darker after the holiday.
（度完假后）你看上去更健康了。
误译点：中国人以肤白为美，而在英语文化中，黝黑的皮肤象征健美。
13. As luck would have it, he was caught by the teacher again.
不幸的是，他又一次被老师逮个正着。
他中奖了，又被老师逮个正着。
14. She held the little boy by the right hand.
她抓着小男孩的右手。
误译点：by与with的区别，不是“她用右手抓着小男孩”
15. Are you there?/Do you follow me?
你还在听吗？
16. If you think he is a good man, think again.
如果你认为他是好人，那你就大错特错了。
17. That took his breath away.
他大惊失色。
18. Two is company but three is none.
两人成伴，三人不欢。
两个和尚抬水吃，三个和尚没水吃。
19. They went away as wise as they came.
他们一无所获。（走的时候和来的时候一样，依然什么都不懂）
再比如：
He was as wise as he went.
他和从前一样什么都不懂。
20. The president has been seen and not heard.
这个总统有名无权。
21. Better late than the late.
迟到总比丧命好。/ 晚了总比完了好。
误译点：late在同一个句子里所表达的意思不同。
22. My grandfather is nearly ninety and in his second childhood.
我祖父快90岁了，什么事都需要别人来做。
23. Work once and work twice.
一次得手，再次不愁。
24. There is another case of January and May.
他们又是老夫少妻。
这个故事源自杰弗雷·乔叟《坎特伯雷故事集》，January是位伯爵，60岁时娶了年轻的May。
